While reading through the latest issue of Linux Format magazine, I stumbles across another example of why Open Source is a good thing. In the Q&A section of the magazine a user asked what happened to his boot loader after a Windows re-installation on his dual-boot system. The first paragraph of the reply is a perfect illustration of why the choice that Open Source offers is probably its greatest achievement: "This is a common problem, caused by the Windows installer's assumption there there are no non-Microsoft operating systems." I do not have aproblem with Microsoft's software or operating systems. Indeed for many situations they are a decent solution. It is this unbelievable arrogance (or should I say ignorance) that drives me up the wall. It is their assumption that I would not want anything else but Microsoft on my computer that made me look for alternatives. And it even annoys me to such an extent that I now want to use non-Linux programs, even if the Microsoft alternative is better. I have now removed Windows from all my laptops and only run Linux (Ubuntu). So far I have not missed Windows at all and with the way Linux is going, I am pretty sure that I will never miss it again.
